Volkswagen UP! 2 Door Small Car in India

Volkswagen Up ConceptSmall cars and more of them. They just keep coming. Now, Volkswagen who has had plans of a small car for India for a while and is now working out a pricing strategy for the car. Automakers see India as the hub for small, affordable cars and the market for such cars will only increase. India is regarded a the fastest growing automobile market, second only to China. Volkswagen’s smallest offering to date is the VW Polo hatchback.

The new VW Up! small car could be placed below the VW Polo. There Indian players like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors who have products in this segment of the market. VW’s new Up! will take on the Maruti Alto and the likes. Most auto brands in India are turning to more afforcdable products. In fact Hyundai too is coming up with the H800, a car that will be cheaper than the smallest Hyundai car today, the Santro.

Volkswagen Up ConceptVolkswagen India have high hopes from the new small car as it will offer a choice to customers looking for affordable mobility. The Polo and Vento constitute 95 percent of the sales. The company’s plant at Chakan near Pune has been manufacturing VW cars and recently the 100,000 th car rolled of the production lines. The Volkswagen Up! could also roll off these production lines when it arrives in the next couple of years.

The car could be priced between Rs 3.5 lakh. The VW UP! was first unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show back in 2007. The car is expected to be launched in Europe later this year and we could see an India launch in years time. According to VW, the car is in its final stages of production. The Up! is a two door, four seat car but when it comes to India, a pair of doors will be added for the rear seat passengers.
