For $526 at JB Hi-Fi the 10.1in Acer Iconia TAB A500 (16GB) is an affordable and functional tablet. It weighs just 700 grams, has a reasonable 16GB of solid state drive storage along with the ports and features you’d hope for in a tablet, and given the low price it’s a real bargain.
The A500 is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 250 (1GHz) processor and 1GB of RAM, so the performance of Android Honeycomb on the 10.1in (1,280×800 resolution) capacitive screen is very snappy. There’s a pair of stereo speakers and a microphone, which together with the front facing camera allows you to make video calls without difficulty. There’s also a rear facing camera which is serviceable although photo happy users will fill the 16GB SSD sooner rather than later.
There’s a MicroSD card reader that can be used to supplement the 16GB SSD, and there’s also 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1. The connectivity of the A500 is still good by tablet standards and while it doesn’t have 3G the low price explains why. Connecting the A500 to other devices isn’t going to be a hassle thanks to the mini-HDMI and micro-USB 2.0 ports.
